The Time Machine

Legend says that Brompton Cemetery has a time machine--and not just any old time machine, but a "fully-functioning" time machine. It's in the tomb of Hannah Courtoy, a wealthy socialite who died in 1849. She was fascinated with Egypt and friends with a sculptor and Egyptologist who designed her tomb.

Unfortunately, the key to the door of the crypt has been lost. A descendant was trying to get a key made, but whether he was successful or not, we've not been able to determine.

Of course, we had to check it out. How often do you get the chance to explore a fully-functioning time machine? As we approached the tomb, it didn't appear particularly awe-inspiring.

But that was the view from the side. Kevin went around the back and found a sort of lever. He fiddled with it, and then he went around to the door and pushed.

Suddenly, he disappeared. (And no, he didn't just go "down the pub.") But the tomb began to glow.

After about ten minutes, he returned. I asked him where he had been. Had he been able to travel in time? But he couldn't remember. And the tomb looked much as it had before.

We still don't know if Kevin truly traveled in time, but at least he had an opportunity that few will ever know.
