A Note About the Photos on the Blog: I'm honored when someone mistakes my photos for Kevin's. But Kevin is a serious photographer, and I'm not. I try to identify the photos I've stolen from Kevin, because while I am proud of some of my snapshots, I wouldn't want him to be blamed for some of my poorer pictures. So thank you to those of you who have commented on my photos. One of these days, I will do a series of photos by the real photography talent in the family--Kevin.
We've been pleasantly surprised that food prices in London have not been as great as expected. There are several little shops and stands where we can buy groceries and bakery items, and about once a week we make a trip to Tesco, the large supermarket nearby.
Kevin is thrilled with the Stilton, his favorite cheese! If we calculated correctly, at 12 GBP (or pounds sterling) per kilo (and figuring that a kilo is around 2.2 pounds in weight), then he pays about $7.13per pound, compared to a mediocre Stilton at home at $19.99 per pound. [Note: Earlier, I mis-stated this by half! It's 5.45 GBP per pound in weight.]
Of course, we haven't yet been down to Neal's Yard, where you can get the very best Stilton. But Kevin finds the supermarket varitety more than edible.
Grapes are 2 GBP for 500 grams, working out to about $2.62 pound in U.S. terms.
Tesco is a mid-range supermarket, but it has only a small selection of California wines. I recognized these:
Wine prices are much more difficult to compare, because the 9 GBP price for Apothic Red includes all taxes and, of course, in the U.K., it is an import. At home, we must add the 9.2% sales tax, plus any excise tax, which vendors typically pass on to the buyer. We find good buys on French wine, though, and I love French reds!
Oh, yes, we buy other food at Tesco's and Marks and Spencer's too--but hey, if you have cheese, grapes, and wine, what more do you need?
Maybe some flowers from a street stand?
